Too many students enter first-year chemistry courses only to struggle, disengage, and fail. Kimberly Arnold, a lecturer at Indiana University, refused to accept this as inevitable. Through a mix of ‘sleuth work,’ course design choices, and the smart use of technology, she boosted exam performance and reduced DFW rates by a remarkable 13%.
In this special presentation, you’ll learn how Arnold uses Aktiv and Top Hat to break down learning barriers, make problem-solving engaging, and create an environment where students actually want to practice—inside and outside the classroom.
Kim Arnold has been teaching in the Chemistry Department at Indiana University as an adjunct instructor and lecturer for over 15 years. She holds a Master of Arts in Chemistry Teaching degree which gives her a solid foundation in evidence-based pedagogical methods.
Arnold teaches various large-enrollment introductory and general chemistry courses and has developed a highly successful Internship in Chemical Instruction program to train undergraduate students to serve as peer instructors in courses in the chemistry department. In addition, she serves as the liaison to teachers in the Advanced College Project, a dual-credit partnership between IU and various high schools.
